Silk is a beautiful, luxurious fabric that requires a little extra attention to keep its softness, sheen, and texture intact. Whether it’s a favourite blouse, scarf, or set of sheets, with the right care, your silk garments will last longer and stay looking their best. Here's how to wash, dry, iron, and store your Sportscraft silk clothing the right way.
How to Wash Silk by Hand
Soak: Fill a basin with lukewarm water and soak your silk for no more than 10 minutes.
Detergent: Use a silk-specific detergent or a mild soap. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Stains: Gently rub any stains with your fingers or a soft cloth.
Rinse: Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue.
How to Wash Silk by Machine-Washing
If you need to machine wash your silk, always select the "hand wash" cycle and avoid using the spin cycle.
Detergent: Choose a detergent made for silk and skip the fabric softener, as it can leave residue.
Protection: Place your silk garment in a laundry bag to protect it from damage.
How to Dry Silk
Do not twist: Never twist or wring out silk as this can distort the fabric.
Dabbing: Gently press your silk garment between two clean towels to absorb excess moisture.
Airdry: Lay your silk flat or hang it on a hanger to dry. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat to prevent fading or damage.
How to Iron Silk
Low heat: Always iron silk on the lowest heat setting and ideally, inside out to avoid damage.
Damp cloth: For added protection, use a slightly damp cloth between the iron and the fabric.
No direct heat: Avoid ironing silk directly, as high temperatures can scorch or burn the delicate fibres.
Additional Washing Tips
Silk doesn’t need to be washed after every wear. Only wash it when necessary to do your part in reducing your impact on the environment. Store silk in a cool, dry place away from damp conditions to avoid the buildup of mildew. Always wash coloured silk items separately, especially the first time, to prevent colour transfer and bleed.
Always follow the care instructions on your Sportscraft clothing’s label for best results.
